It’s still Easter!!!
That’s right. Easter isn’t just a one-day celebration of Jesus’ resurrection, it’s a whole season, which we usually call Eastertide. In one of the Church’s great Easter hymns, St John of Damascus (8th century) called Easter Day “the day of splendor,” and Eastertide “the Queen of Seasons” and “the royal feast of feasts.” And since the resurrection of Jesus is the crown of our faith, we just can’t confine its celebration to just one day!
So we carry it on for fifty days, singing Easter hymns every Sunday and reading in the Scriptures about how the Apostles proclaimed the Easter faith everywhere they went, and refused to stop even in the face of the harshest opposition. Eastertide includes the celebration of Jesus’ ascension into heaven forty days after rising from the dead, and end on the Day of Pentecost as we celebrate the sending of the Holy Spirit to fill the Church and empower her to proclaim this greatest of Good News.
We’d love for you to join us any time during this celebration (Sundays at 9:30 am), or to find a welcoming church anywhere to hear the Good News of Christ crucified, risen, ascended and glorified.
